Stephanie Chang, Ph.D. '18

Dr. Stephanie H. Chang brings more than two decades of higher education experience to her work leading the University of Maryland’s efforts to foster belonging and build community across campus through continuous engagement, education, assessment, and collaboration. In addition to building and executing this campus-wide vision, she oversees Belonging & Community at UMD, a department which comprises Bias Incident Support Services, Bias Incident Support Services, the LGBTQ+ Equity Center, the Nyumburu Cultural Center, the Office of the ADA Coordinator, the Office of Civil Rights and Sexual Misconduct, the Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education and TerrapinSTRONG Education.

In her prior role as assistant vice president for belonging, Chang co-led the campuswide Belonging & Community at UMD climate survey and ensuing efforts to leverage its data insights to shape action plans aimed at enhancing experiences of belonging on campus. She also supervised five of Belonging & Community’s units.

Chang joined UMD after serving as the assistant vice president of institutional equity for student life at the University of Delaware. Her work at Delaware included managing a $3.5M, 5,000-square-foot capital facility renovation project and conceptualizing a vision for the new physical space to engage campus constituents in inclusion and community-building.

A proud EdTerp, Chang holds a Ph.D. in higher education, student affairs, & international education from the University of Maryland, College Park and serves as an affiliate faculty member of the College of Education’s student affairs concentration. She also holds a master’s degree in college student affairs from The Pennsylvania State University and a bachelor’s degree in African & Afro-American studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
