About

Patrick O’Shea has led the joint $1.4 billion research enterprise at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) and University of Maryland, Baltimore since July 1, 2025.

He was UMCP's vice president for research from 2011-16 then served as president of University College Cork, Ireland (UCC). O’Shea served most recently as deputy vice president for research at UMCP.

O’Shea is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, with affiliate appointments in the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics and the Department of Physics. An expert in electromagnetics, O’Shea is best known for his work on particle accelerators and free-electron lasers; he is a fellow of several professional societies.

He received his bachelor's degree in physics from UCC, and his master's and doctoral degrees in physics from UMCP.
